Guess the Company
Every morning at 9:30 a.m. Eastern, the moment the opening bell rings on Wall Street, a new mystery company appears here. You get its real income statement — the last eight quarters of revenue, costs, profit, earnings per share and share count, exactly as filed with the SEC — with the name blacked out. Your job is to name the stock.
You have 6 tries to type its ticker symbol, and the board is exactly as wide as the ticker, so you always know whether you are hunting for a one-letter legend, a two-letter blue chip or a three- or four-letter name. After every guess the tiles show which letters are right, and a new hint unlocks: the exchange and fiscal year, how far back its filings go, how big it is, the shape of its name and finally the first letter of the ticker.
Some days it is a household name, some days a company you buy from every week without knowing it is public. The week starts with the best-known names; Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays get harder, and Friday is the toughest. Everyone gets the same company on the same day, so compare your grid with friends — the share button posts the colours, never the answer.
How to play
- Read the statement — Revenue size and trend, gross margin, how much goes to R&D, whether it makes money at all, how many shares are out — every line is a clue to what kind of business this is.
- Type a ticker — Any real Nasdaq- or NYSE-listed ticker with the right number of letters, on the on-screen keyboard or your own, then Enter. Made-up tickers are refused and don’t cost a guess.
- Green — the right letter in the right spot.
- Amber — the letter is in the ticker, but somewhere else. A doubled letter is only marked as often as it really appears.
- Gray — the letter isn’t in the ticker at all. The keyboard keeps track for you.
- Hints — each miss unlocks the next one. Colour-blind? Switch to orange and blue with the button above the board.
- Share — when you are done, post your grid of coloured squares — it shows how you got there without giving the company away.
Questions
When does the new puzzle come out?
Every day at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time (ET), when the U.S. stock market opens — weekends and holidays included. Before 9:30 you can still play the previous day’s puzzle; the countdown on the page shows exactly how long until the next one, and the page loads it by itself when the bell rings.
Where does the data come from?
From the quarterly reports (Form 10-Q) that U.S.-listed companies file with the Securities and Exchange Commission — the same figures you can browse for any company on its stock page here. Money is in U.S. dollars, shortened to K, M and B (thousands, millions, billions); earnings per share are in dollars per share.
Which companies can come up?
Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange companies with clean, recent quarterly results — from the most-searched names on the site to businesses with billions in sales and much lower profiles. Tickers run from one to four letters. Banks, funds and foreign companies that don’t file quarterly U.S. income statements never appear.
How do streaks work?
Your streak counts the daily puzzles you have solved in a row. Missing a day or running out of guesses resets it. Stats are kept in this browser, and every win adds to your arcade net worth alongside the other games on the site.
Can I play old puzzles?
Yes. After you finish, the recent puzzles you haven’t played are listed under your result. Archive games are just for fun: they don’t change your stats or your streak.
Why was my guess rejected?
It has to be a ticker that is actually listed, letters only, with exactly as many letters as the board. Refused guesses don’t use up a try.
